St. Nepomuk’s Statue

Oberndorf

18,07 km from Salzburg Residence Palace

Dedicated to the patron saint of raftsmen and boatmen.

At the beginning of the staircase up to the Calvary, a high pedestal displays the life-size marble statue of St. Nepomuk. At the times of salt shipping, statues in reverence of this patron of raftsmen and boatmen and of bridges were widespread since the Salzach was an untamed river.

The statue, sculptured by the Laufen artist Joseph Anton Pfaffinger in 1720, reflects the rare devotion of this patron, who was canonized in 1729.
