In the late Ice Age, the Kaprun Valley was covered by an immense glacier. Slowly flowing towards the valley, it ground down the hard rock. Once melted, the glacier left behind a valley through which the Kapruner Ache now flowed, in turn etching away at the Sigmund Thun Gorge.
