A hearty welcome in Strobl at the lake Wolfgangsee

Strobl is situated at the east shore of the Abersee lake, which is the old name or this part of Wolfgangsee lake. The name goes back to the iron merchant family Strobl, of whom the village´s sign of arms reminds us. The name Strobl meaning "unkempt man" was very common in south Germany.

From late medieval times to the 17th century Strobl was a centre of pilgrims and carters. When the nearby town of Bad Ischl became famous because of the Habsburg family Strobl got increasingly important, too.

At the turn of the century it had already become a well-known holiday resort with modern facilities. With its wide, flat lake shore and natural beaches today Strobl is among the most famous holiday resorts in the Salzkammergut region, which features almost all kinds of sports and leisure time facilites.

The Postalm area (1,200-2,000 m altitude) near Strobl is the largest mountain plateau in Austria (40 km²). In summer one can go on extensive hiking tours, in winter the ski center has 8 lifts, numerous downhill slopes and nordic ski tracks at all levels of difficulty.
