Palmweihe

At Palm Sunday girls and boys tinker so named “Palmbuschen” or “Palmbeserl”. As Jesus came into Jerusalem, people greeted him with palm leafs. Today these wreaths symbolise the palm leafs. The wreaths are made of domestic plants like “Palmkätzchen”, “Stechpalme” (english holly), “Buchs” (box tree), “Kranawett”, “Eiben” (yews), “Segen”, “Zeder” (cedar).

After the churchly consecration the wreaths are used as a protection for gardens and fields. As a protection against thunderstorms people throw the wreaths into the fireplace.
